White Chocolate - Excerpts

It was a new day, the sun was shining, butterflies fluttering, and you could smell the flowers in the air.  Stephanie bent over to smell one of the tulips, she loved flowers, but she was no good at keeping them once they were out of the ground.  Out of nowhere, a shadow appeared beside Stephanie, it was her ex-boyfriend Sam.  He had a bouquet basket of flowers in his hands.

“Hello Stephanie, he said in a smooth, low voice.”

Recognizing the voice Stephanie stood up and turned in his direction addressing him before turning and walking away from him.

“Sam why are you here?”

Sam went after her searching for the words to come from his mouth.  “You have been on my mind... here I brought you some flowers.”

Stephanie eyes were impressed but her heart said no and she turned up her nose.  “I do not want them, why don’t you donate them to a center.”

Sam insisted that she take them and babbled, “They are your favorite; look… I have blended the stargazer lilies, blue iris, white daisies, orange carnations, purple statice, and yellow… whatever they are.”

Stephanie kept on walking away, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her.

Sam reached for her but she was out of his grasp; he groveled.  “Wait.  Come on now Stephanie; I know you don’t mean that.  Here, please take them.  I bought them for you; besides, the guy doesn’t give refunds.”  Sam paused for a moment before speaking again.  “Stephanie please, can we talk for a minute?”

Stephanie was looking over her shoulder with her arms folded.  “Sam, we do not have anything to talk about.  Why don’t you just leave me alone and go do whatever it was that made you walk out of my life in the first place.”

Sam slid in close behind her and placed his hand on her shoulder.  “That is actually why I came by.  I wanted to apologize to you for walking out on you.  Honey, you have changed and I have changed… I want to be a part of you.  Please, don’t make me beg you out in public; can we just talk about it?”

Sam knew that if he gave her too long to think things through, he would not get another chance.

“I can come by around eight o’clock, if that is all right with you.”

Stephanie assumed that he was out of his mind or yet she lost hers for holding a conversation with him.  “Do not honey me!  You have not earned that right.  What is wrong with you men these days?  You get a woman, mistreat her, and leave her, just to run back to her after all the wrong you have done.  Are you sick in the head or something?”

Sam continued to plea with Stephanie, “Can we please just talk later on tonight?  I promise to make it up to you, just hear me out.  So, can I come by around eight o’clock or what?”

Stephanie did not want to argue and she definitely did not want to make a scene in front of her job.   “Sure, if it will get you to go away.”

Stephanie walked off, leaving him standing there with the flowers in his hands.  She did not want any part of him; however, her heartbeat fluttered a little bit faster just talking to him.  Somewhere deep inside, she really did want him, but her guards were up and now was not a time to get soft.
